Statuesque is the word for Naomi Campbell, an icon of our time who, it seems, can inflame opinion in any observer. Statuesque is also the word for Naomi – Nick Knight’s 25-foot interactive sculpture that formed the centrepiece of the exhibition SHOWstudio: Fashion Revolution at London’s Somerset House.
RICK RUBIN is perhaps the most important record producer of the past 25 years. His stamp on contemporary music is immeasurable. While still a student at NYU, Rubin borrowed $5,000 from his parents to start the Def Jam label with Russell Simmons. Soon he was working with the cream of the music world — Jay-Z, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Slayer, Danzig, U2, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Dixie Chicks, to name a few — transcending musical genres like no other producer before him. Rubin has meditated for most of his life and, with an unusual regime of exercise, has recently lost 130 pounds. Rubin’s stellar career is now the stuff of legend, but we wanted to know more about the man behind the myth.
A couple months ago, members of The SHHO met with the KDU president and founder, at the agency headquarters, taking courtside seats at a large worktable, to what can be described by many words; a conversation, the most sensible choice. Whatever the case, it became obvious to all, that David Gensler is larger than life. He is unapologetically transparent, with shame seeming to have walked out on him many years ago. He is brash, even in first impressions, just as those who do not give a fuck usually are. And he is as opinionated as a man whose home is a soapbox. It was admirable.
“We were just having some big meetings today with some big, new partners and nobody wants to consult anymore.”
