War Witch, his latest feature was entirely shot in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in July 2011. Presented in Official Competition at Berlin International Film Festival War Witch received the Silver Bear for Best Actress (Rachel Mwanza) and a special mention from the Ecumenical Jury.

Ayana V. Jackson (born May 14, 1977) is a US American photographer and filmmaker. Born in Livingston, New Jersey, she received her B.A. in Sociology from Spelman College in 1999. In 2005 at the invitation of professor Khatarina Sieverding, she studied critical theory and large format printing at the University of Arts Berlin. She is best known for her focus on Contemporary Africa and the African Diaspora, most notably the series African by Legacy, Mexican by Birth.

Did you feel a pressure to pursue your trained profession as a mason?
It was a big risk for me – everything I had earned through masonry I was obliged to invest in learning the art of photography. Cheaper material did not produce beautiful photos. I threw everything I had into making images.
